Personality:
Bright-eyed and curious and possessing all the bottled energy of a vat of Red Bull, Greg is a fairly typical kid by average standards. More upbeat, nearly impenetrable when it comes to mood swings and meltdowns (he's never shown throwing a tantrum, and the only instance of him visibly sad comes at the very end and more a byproduct of his own guilt) but still a kid. That said, where most children and adults would be terrified or traumatized, Greg barely bats an eyelash: he tries to open the door for a possessed girl that wants to eat them, he's chased by a hideous, misshapen wolf-creature and throws candy at its feet and converses with the horrifying Beast of the Forest like he's talking to a regular, average Joe.

That's not to say he doesn't get scared; he runs in fear from plenty of monstrous creatures and situations (usually spurred on by someone else-- like Wirt-- making a terrified run for it, or another adult such as Quincy Endicott shivering about the spooky ghost haunting his manor) but it's almost always superficial and fleeting, and Greg is generally shown to bounce right back minutes or even seconds later.

His short attention span is likely to blame for that. Greg's tendency to run off on a whim or change subjects at the drop of a hat is legendary. He skips the school they find in the forest to play made-up games with forest animals but shows up for lunch and interrupts its monotony with a song, toys around with his pet frog at just about every given opportunity and even the Beast has trouble getting Greg to take his assigned tasks seriously enough to get frustrated or worn down.

And it's true that the Beast eventually succeeds, but it's more internal than external: Greg blames himself for getting himself and his brother lost (as Wirt himself suggests throughout the series in frustration) via all his fooling around, and confesses to Wirt that the pet rock he carries around and flashes in conversation was a rock he stole from their neighbor back home, a woman named Mrs Daniels that gives Greg Halloween candy in exchange for him raking her leaves (she believes nothing in life is free, not even holiday candy). It's a sharp contrast to Wirt's outward response to stress and failure and life in general, making the brothers polar opposites in the personality department. Understandable, given age differences and life experiences and even their own household; they're stepbrothers, after all, and if the disconnect is anything to go by, probably more recent ones at that.

But the series makes it a point to show how dedicated Greg is to Wirt and vice versa - when Greg is offered a free pass to go home but is told Wirt can't follow, he refuses. More than that, to help his older brother, Greg leaves with the Beast immediately afterwards. Self sacrifice might be a concept above the average kid's head, but Greg clearly cares enough to put Wirt first when it really matters in spite of his rambling and excited, wild running, and in the end the fact that it's mutual saves them both.
